The Kyoto protocol: a favour to developing nations, a woe to developed nations?
Abstract
INTRODUCTION
It has been argued in various fora that the Kyoto Protocol favours developing nations to the disadvantage of the developed nation. This paper sets out to examine the above assertion with a view to coming to a conclusion as to the truth or otherwise of same. Attempts will be made to give the background of the Kyoto Protocol and what it stands for before considering its advantages and disadvantages to the globe at large; and specifically what favour or disfavour it holds for developing nations including Nigeria.
Following scientific warnings about the depletion of the ozone system through harmful activities of man, the United States of America banned the use of aerosols containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) believed to be injurious to the ozone layer. The ozone layer shields man from ultra violet rays of the sun reaching the earth surface and which causes cancer. Such ultra violet radiation is also scientifically proven to have adverse effect on animals and plants.
