Your Calling as a Lawyer

Abstract

One attribute which the legal profession has always maintained is its guaranteed certitude. Camden L.C.J. once said in 1975:

"If it is law, it will be found in our books. If it is not to be found there it is not law"
(Case of Seizure of Papers, How. St. Trials 1066)

Whenever the law speaks there must be some just and honest reason for it or else based on some universally settled rules of law on which it is grounded. The first law is that of Nature, which God at the time of creation infused into man's heart for his preservation and direction. That is lex aeterna the moral law also called the Law of Nature. And by that law written with the finger of God in the heart of man, for a long time governed their lives before the law was written by Moses, who was the first reporter or writer of law in the world — per Lord Coke — Calvins Case (1608) 4 CO 21.

Lord Holt in characterising a lawyer defined him as a Minister of right and justice, who by the very maxims of his profession is to be above mercenary and sordid interests, and who is admitted to the fullest and most distinct view of our laws, the accumulated wisdom of above a thousand years and of the wonderful and divine fabric of the Constitution.
