THE ROLE OF LAWYERS IN FOSTERING ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION (ADR) IN THE MULTI-DOOR COURTHOUSE

Abstract

Introduction

In the past two decades Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms are gradually being mainstreamed into the administration of justice system in Nigeria in the effort to improve the pace of justice delivery. Courts are reforming the processes for justice delivery through the concept of multi-door courthouse. Lawyers, as key actors in the justice sector, cannot be aloof to these developments. Apart from a conceptual analysis of ADR and the multi-door courthouse, there is also the need to fully chart the path for lawyers in the discharge of their duties to their clients within the framework of the current reforms. This paper, therefore, explores the role of a lawyer in ADR within the framework of the multi-door courthouse. It covers the following key areas/issues:
